Antonio Conte has struggled to replicate his achievements from last season
Frank Lampard says serious questions need to be asked within Chelsea this summer about their transfer approach.
In an exclusive interview with Hawksbee and Jacobs, the Blues legend warned his old club they risk falling behind Manchester City and Manchester United if they don’t back Antonio Conte heavily.
He said: “It is very evident that in terms of strengthening, they didn’t [last summer]. They lost big players in [Nemanja] Matic and [Diego] Costa and they did buy some but I think the manager wasn’t that happy with that.
“There was a downturn in performances from the players as well, which can happen having won a league, which is disappointing.
“It is important for Chelsea, for continuity, to come in the top four. We are not going to win the league this year so they have to come in the top four and try to have a Champions League run.
“There need to be some serious questions in the summer, to say: ‘Ok, everyone else is recruiting around us, the Manchester clubs in particular’ and you are going to have to match that to a degree to stay in the game. That’s the way football has gone.”
Legends of football is one of the sport’s most prestigious charity awards and events — and this year is to induct England, Chelsea, West Ham, Manchester City and New York City legend Frank Lampard into its roll call of all-time greats. Lampard is joining the likes of John Charles, Sir Stanley Matthews, Brian Clough, Sir Bobby Robson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Kenny Dalglish, Alan Shearer, Eric Cantona and last year’s recipient Steven Gerrard. Sponsored by hmv, Legends Of Football has raised over £7million for music therapy charity Nordoff Robbins since its first event in 1997. The charity is dedicated to changing the lives of vulnerable and isolated people. The event is on Monday October 8 and tickets are available from www.lofootball.co.uk
